Program Policy

  • All eligibility requirements apply from the time of application.
  • Applicants are considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin and/or physical impairment.
  • Fulbright Canada awards are merit-based, and can be held concurrently with other awards and/or salaries.

  • Be proficient in English.

A period of nine months or more during a calendar year is considered to constitute a full year abroad.

NOTES

  • Canadian Fulbright grantees enter the United States under an Exchange Visitor (J-1) Visa and, upon completion of the end of their exchange, are subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement - Section 212(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
  • Grants shall not authorize activities for which a license to practice medicine or nursing is required.
  • Grantees must demonstrate sound physical and mental health. Finalists are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be completed.
  • Candidates who previously held a Fulbright Student grant should be aware that, as a general matter, preference will be given to candidates who have not previously received a Student grant. Previous Fulbright Student grantees are expected to make a strong justification in their application for a repeat Fulbright grant.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have not had substantial recent experience in the United States. The Board defines substantial recent experience as study, teaching, research or employment for a period aggregating more than an academic year (nine months) during the past five years.
