This autumn, Fulbright Canada will be partnering with the Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) at the University of Ottawa to bring a series of speakers to the university to discuss some of the foreign policy issues that are key to the American election.
This series will feature two Canadian Fulbright alumni who work on American politics. The goal is to stimulate a balanced and thoughtful dialogue in Canada about the American general election.
On September 23rd at 12:00 pm, Dr. Frédérick Gagnon (Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Quebec Studies at the State University of New York, Plattsburgh and Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at the University of California, Berkeley, 2014-2015) spoke about the U.S. elections and their importance for Quebec and for Canada.
Dr. Gagnon is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and Director of the Center for United States Studies at the Raoul Dandurand Chair. His presentation took place in the Faculty of Social Sciences building, Room 5028, 120 University Private, Ottawa.
On October 5th at 1:30 pm, Dr. Stefanie von Hlatky (Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Public Diplomacy at the Center for Public Diplomacy in the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, 2015-2016) will present a talk entitled “American Defence Policy: Why Allies Followed Obama but Won’t Follow the Next President”.
Dr. von Hlatky is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University and the Director of the Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy (CIDP). Her presentation will take place in Faculty of Social Sciences building, Room 4006, 120 University Private, Ottawa.
Other speakers in the series will include Harold Koh on November 3, 2016 at 4:00 pm and Bruce Jentleson and Peter Feaver on September 29, 2016 at 12:00 pm.
Frédérick Gagnon is Associate Professor of Political Science at l’Université du Québec à Montréal and Director of the Center for United States Studies at the Raoul Dandurand Chair. He was a Fulbright grantee at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (2005), Visiting Scholar at the Canada Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and at the Center for American Politics and Citizenship of the University of Maryland (2006), and Visiting Scholar/Professor at the Center for Canadian-American Studies of Western Washington University (2008). He is the author of one of the rare French language texbooks on the U.S. Congress (2006) and his latest publications include a book on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee (2013) and journal articles on U.S. congressional elections, U.S. culture wars and the representation of American politics in U.S. popular culture (digital games, adult animated sitcoms, etc.). He teaches American government and U.S. foreign policy at the University of Québec in Montreal.
Stéfanie von Hlatky is an assistant professor of political studies at Queen’s University and the Director of the Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy (CIDP). She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Université de Montréal in 2010, where she was also Executive Director for the Centre for International Peace and Security Studies. She has held positions at Georgetown University’s Center for Peace and Security Studies, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Dartmouth College’s Dickey Center for International Understanding, the Centre for Security Studies at ETH Zurich and was a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at the University of Southern California’s Centre for Public Diplomacy. She has published in the Canadian Journal of Political Science, the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal, International Journal, European Security, Asian Security, as well as the Journal of Transatlantic Studies and has a book with Oxford University Press entitled American Allies in Times of War: The Great Asymmetry (2013). She has also published two edited volumes: The Future of US Extended Deterrence (co-edited with Andreas Wenger) with Georgetown University Press (2015) and Going to War? Trends in Military Interventions (co-edited with H. Christian Breede) with McGill-Queen’s University Press (2016). Stéfanie von Hlatky is the founder of Women in International Security-Canada and current Chair of the Board. She has received grants and awards from NATO, the Canadian Department of National Defence, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of Research and Innovation and Fulbright Canada.
