Sustainability Lessons from the Arctic

As a part of Fulbright Canada’s 30th Anniversary Speaker Series, two distinguished scholars, Dr. Greg Poelzer and Dr. Elizabeth Rink will offer insights into what life in the Arctic can teach us as we battle a pandemic and work to create a sustainable future.  Key innovations from the Arctic can help us address sustainability in a world in transition.  Elizabeth Rink and Greg Poelzer will discuss how models in the Arctic may provide pathways for other parts of the world in energy, health, and security.

Dr. Poelzer and Dr. Rink, both scholars with extensive experience in the Arctic, are leading the third round of the Fulbright Arctic Initiative. This initiative brings together professionals, practitioners, and researchers from Canada, the Kingdom of Denmark including Greenland and the Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States, for group seminars and an individual Fulbright exchange to address key research and policy questions related to fostering a secure and sustainable Arctic.

Dr. Greg Poelzer is a Professor in the School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS) at the University of Saskatchewan. He is the Co-Director of the Community Appropriate Sustainable Energy Security (CASES) Project, which spans 17 Indigenous and Northern communities across Canada, Alaska, Norway, and Sweden. Greg also is the Lead of the Renewable Energy in Remote and Indigenous Communities Flagship Initiative at the University of Saskatchewan and Lead of the UArctic Thematic Network on Renewable Energy. 

Dr. Elizabeth Rink is a Professor of Community Health in the Department of Health and Human Development at Montana State University,Bozeman, MT, USA. She is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Interdisciplinary Research Leaders Fellow. Dr. Rink's research examines the individual, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental determinants of sexual and reproductive health among indigenous populations in Montana and the Arctic.
