Fulbright Canada Fall Orientation 2018

On September 14th and 15th, Fulbright Canada plays host to this year’s incoming American Fulbright students and scholars, along with all of the Killam (undergraduate) Fellows, and welcomes them to Canada’s national capital for the annual Fulbright Canada Fall Orientation.

Fall orientation is a time for the incoming class of Fulbright Canada 2018-2019 grantees to get to know one another, to meet the staff of the Foundation, to engage with representatives from both Canadian and American governments, to experience life in Canada’s national capital, and to get started on what promises to be an exciting and transformative experience.

During orientation, students and scholars will engage in a wide range of academic and cultural activities, including tours of the Parliament of Canada and visits to the National Art Gallery and the Canadian Museum of History. This year participants have the rare opportunity to take an Indigenous Walking Tour to further enhance their understanding of Canadian history through the eyes of Canada’s First Nations. The participants will also enjoy formal academic panel discussions, highlighting the cutting edge research of a number of Fulbright scholars. Each year, the panel presentations prompt lively conversations between students and scholars, providing opportunities for networking and for professional development. The weekend concludes with one of Canada’s favourite pastimes – the good old hockey game.

A formal reception and dinner will take place on Friday night, featuring welcoming remarks from representatives of the two governments and the Fulbright Canada board chair, along with an after dinner address by Florida Polytechnic University Provost Dr. Terry Parker.

Fall Orientation is an important part of the overall residential exchange experience. The goals are to welcome students and scholars to Canada, familiarize them with the program, and provide them with the opportunity to connect with people who will be part of a lifelong network – the Fulbright Canada community.

Organized by the Fulbright Canada Secretariat, the two-day event is made possible through the generous support of the U.S. Department of State, Global Affairs Canada, and an endowment from the American Killam Trusts.
