Honouring Nations Canada National Good Governance Awards Finalists Announced - Recognizing Excellence in Indigenous Governance
Ottawa, ON, April 2, 2024 - Honouring Nations Canada (HNC), an initiative of Fulbright Canada, is pleased to announce the honourees of its inaugural National Indigenous Good Governance Awards. HNC was established to recognize, celebrate, and share examples of Indigenous achievement. Inspired by the Honoring Nations program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, HNC provides national awards, supports Indigenous research, and promotes knowledge sharing.
Honouring Nations Canada encourages and supports good governance in Indigenous communities, as well as the principles and practices of reconciliation, and provides opportunities for Indigenous students, scholars, and those working on matters that impact Indigenous communities.
The HNC biennial National Indigenous Good Governance Award program identifies, celebrates, and shares outstanding examples of excellence in Indigenous governance. It expands the capacity of Indigenous nation-builders by sharing their experiences and learning the best practices of other Indigenous Communities. The recognition categories and their honourees are:
- Building Sovereignty/Nation Building - Tŝilhqot’in National Government, British Columbia
- Environmental Stewardship and Climate Action - Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources, Nova Scotia
- Partnerships and Collaboration - Eenou-Eeyou Community Foundation (EECF), Quebec
- Cultural Revitalization - Stoney Nakoda Tribal Administration, Alberta
- Community Governance/Programming - First Nations Health Authority, British Columbia
- Northern Nation Building - Nunavut Quest Dog Team Committee, Nunavut
- Bill Montour Legacy Award - Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, Nova Scotia
According to Robin McLay, Regional Director of Fulbright Canada West and Honouring Nations Canada Director, “We had an overwhelming response to our first call for nominations. Our Circle of Advisors spent much time reviewing the submissions and are proud of the incredible work done nationwide. We look forward to hosting the honourees and our guests at our upcoming knowledge-sharing and celebration event.”
The event is being held in Ottawa on May 9, 2024. The knowledge-sharing session will be held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and open to the public.
